Past Featured Matches

Each month AFC features one of its matches. Below are matches that have been highlighted in past months.

May

Jason and John have been matched for one year this month and have a really great relationship. As a mentee, John uses his mentor as a support system and “go-to” person to consult with and bounce ideas off when needed. Their mentorship has allowed him to open up to his mentor in ways that he normally didn’t with adults. Jason often talks about how great his mentee is to his friends and co-workers and has also helped AFC by volunteering to talk to our funders during site visits (and it worked—we got the funding!). Their relationship has motivated others in Jason’s circle to also join the AFC Community. Congratulations on being AFC’s Match of the Month!

April

Mentor Julie and her mentee Tina have been matched for over four years and still look forward to their weekly meeting with each other.

Over the years, Julie and Tina have been able to try many new things together. They see their relationship as having no end date. Thank you to Julie and Tina for brightening not only each other's lives, but for being a positive energy in the AFC community.

March

Mentor Patti and mentee Tylor have been matched for one year this March. Tylor, though, has been with AFC for seven years now! Patti has stuck with Tylor through transitions, and now travels to New Hampshire to stay in regular contact with her mentee. Patti was also a star rider and fundraiser for AFC during the Rodman Ride for Kids last September.

Tylor says that Patti is a good friend and fun to spend time with. He's been excited about their anniversary meeting and celebration since last October.

Congratulations to Patti and Tylor for being named the March Match of the Month!

February

Mentor Matt and mentee Jason celebrated their one-year anniversary on February 24, 2010, and are both enjoying the time they have spent together. At first, Jason was a bit hesitant about having an older mentor, but decided to give it a try. Now, one year later, Jason and Matt are enjoying their mentorship and Jason is happy he had an open mind to try a relationship he was not sure of in the beginning. Matt is very supportive of Jason and he always makes himself available for his mentee. Congratulations Matt and Jason on your one-year anniversary and on becoming an AFC featured match!

December

Mentor Gervis and Mentee Eric have been matched for one year this coming Saturday. Gervis has become a very consistent and vital part of Eric’s life, especially during trying transitions. Through their relationship, Eric has learned to utilize his mentorship to his advantage by being very open with his mentor and communicating his feelings. Gervis has continued to seek out every opportunity to sustain Eric's trust in him by always making himself available and being consistent.

Occasionally, Eric will take control of the mentorship by initiating calls to his mentor, instead of the other way around. These actions show Eric's growth and potential to lead a healthy relationship. As of December 5, 2009, Gervis and Eric will have been matched for one year. Congratulations on your anniversary and on being December’s Match of the Month!

November

Mentor Josh and Mentee Alex are our Match of the Month for November!  Josh and Alex have been matched for over a year and half, and they have made huge strides since being matched.  Josh has seen Alex through abrupt moves and continues to see his mentee despite a significantly longer commute.  Josh says that the best part of their relationship is that it’s been consistent.  Since Josh knows the people from Alex’s past placements, Alex has someone to keep memories of his past friends alive.  

Alex says the best part of their relationship is that Josh is a good role model for him and really nice to him.  Alex says he thinks everyone needs a good mentor like Josh.  Congratulations to Josh and Alex for all the work they have put into their mentorship — we are proud of them both!

October

AFC would like to congratulate Stacy and Ray, the featured match for October!

Mentor Stacy and mentee Ray have been matched going on 2 years this month. During this time they have spent a lot of time together and faced some serious challenges that they have managed to get through together. Ray said: "Stacy is like family. I know she's not going anywhere and she'll always be there for me when I want her to, even if I'm not around she still comes to see me."

When asked about one of the highlights of their relationship, Stacy said, "In the past, Ray and I have rescheduled when friends or family have come to the house on our meeting days, but this time she wanted me to meet her new boyfriend... The three of us went downtown to grab a bite to eat and watch the street performers. It turned out to be a really fun day with some good conversations, and I was glad to get to know someone that is a significant part of her life. I was also relieved to find that I had much better feelings about him than her last boyfriend!"

Stacy and Ray, you two are a great match. Congratulations again on being AFC's October Match of the Month!

August

We'd like to congratulate mentee Debbi and mentor Lia, as our August Match of the Month! 

Debbi and Lia have been matched for a year and a half now, and Debbi has been a part of AFC for four years.  Debbi and Lia have gone through "thick and thin, good and bad," and sticking it out has paid off.  Debbi says, "Lia comes out to see me, always, even after the trash I say about her, after I curse her out, after everything I do, she sticks with me, and it means so much.  She's like no one else I've had.  I just want her to know how much I appreciate her, how important she is."  Lia sums up her match by saying, "This has been one of, if not the greatest, experiences in my life . ... I have learned and gained as much from Debbi as she has from me."

Debbi and Lia, congratulations again on being AFC's August Match of the Month!
